I'm Max, a Chemical Engineering with Industrial Placement Year BEng MEng Student currently in my fifth and final year of studies. I'm working under the supervision of Dr Clayton for my MEng research project, where I'm designing, optimising and performing a sustainability assessment on the manufacture of polyester fibres (for textile manufacture) from cellulosic plant materials. The fashion industry is currently the largest polluter in the world, accounting for ~10% of global CO2 emissions. To force the industry to ditch fossil fuel-based materials, my aim is to design process that is renewable on the molecular level which manufactures the precursor molecules (monomers) used in polyester manufacture. This means that the fashion industry as a whole does not need to replace manufacturing equipment or even change their processes - making the green transition as 'seamless' as possible.
